Distance Learning: What is it? How can it Help You Achieve Your Goals?

The Beauty of Distance Learning
Distance learning is a relatively new vehicle for higher education. By taking advantage of the Internet, schools can now offer their classes online and deliver the same content to more students, more effectively. For the schools it provides a more cost-effective vehicle for delivery, but for students the advantages are even greater. Imagine being able to set your own class schedule -- no more early mornings unless you say so! With distance learning you can earn the same degree as in the classroom, but save time in the process.

The Value of an Online Education
Attending college classes through distance learning can provide the same results as sitting in a classroom, but you can skip the hassle of a commute and you get to set the pace. Employers have embraced degrees earned online in recent years and many top employers offer tuition reimbursement programs to encourage their students to go back to school. In a recent survey the American Society for Training and Development found that 29% of corporate tuition reimbursement programs were going to online education or blended programs, which combine distance learning with classroom learning. Of those polled, 60% expected the role of distance learning to increase in their organizations in the next few years. In a survey of Chief Learning Officers and HR Directors conducted by Eduventures, Inc. it was found that over 60% had "a favorable attitude toward online instruction."

What You Should Know About Online Learning
In order to ensure that your degree will carry the proper weight, make sure the school you're considering is properly accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Not all online schools are accredited -- if you want your online degree to help you in your career goals make sure your school is.
